Burnham-on-Sea and the neighbouring village of Brean offer a mixed picture for dog owners. The main beach in Burnham itself is heavily restricted in the warmer months, but Brean Beach stays open to dogs year-round, and there is a solid range of welcoming pubs, cafes and bars, particularly around Brean's holiday parks. Coverage here is growing: this list shows 12 venues, not everything available.

Beaches and green spaces

Burnham-on-Sea beach is tightly controlled. Beach Area 1, between the jetty and the pavilion, is closed to dogs all year round, including the jetty and esplanade steps (Somerset Council, checked 12 August 2026). Beach Area 2, between the jetty and the yacht club, and Beach Area 3, between the pavilion and Maddocks Slade at the north end of the sea wall, are both banned to dogs from 1 May to 30 September each year, though dogs are permitted outside these dates (Somerset Council, checked 12 August 2026). Horses also use parts of the beach and foreshore throughout the year.

Brean Beach is the better option. Dogs are allowed year-round, though they must be kept under control or on a lead (Somerset Council, checked 12 August 2026). It is a busy family beach with small children, many dog walkers and vehicles on the sand, and horses also use the area. Brean Beach Walk, starting near the leisure centre, covers the same stretch and offers waste bins.

Marine Cove Gardens is a peaceful park in Burnham with benches, bins and shaded areas, good for a short, relaxed walk.

Cafes

Cafe 33 on Weston Road welcomes dogs and has outdoor seating and on-site parking. It opens at 8.30am most days, closed Tuesdays.

The Old Rectory in Brean is set in a garden and suits visitors making a day of the beach. Dogs are welcome, and there is on-site parking.

Fortes Cafe & Ice Cream Parlour on Pier Street has a welcoming atmosphere, though the dog policy is unconfirmed. Open 9am to 5pm daily.

Pubs and bars

Dunstan Housen Inn on Love Lane stands out for owners staying over. It welcomes up to two dogs per bedroom (£25 per night additional) and provides beds, blankets, treats and water bowls. Open from 8am daily.

The Railway on College Street welcomes dogs and runs from 9am to late most nights.

Ocean Bar/Kitchen at Ocean Holiday Park in Brean welcomes dogs and is open 11am to 11pm most days, until midnight on Saturdays.

The Iron Duke on the Esplanade is a pub where staff welcome dogs, though specific facilities are not described. Open 11am to midnight most evenings, 2am on Saturdays.

Krackers Bar in Brean welcomes dogs indoors, with staff known for their warm reception. It has an indoor dog zone and is open from 9am, until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Ocean Bar, also in Brean, allows dogs indoors, though the dog policy is unconfirmed. Open from midday most days.

What to know before you go

The beach restrictions in Burnham itself are strict and zoned. If you are visiting between May and September, head to Brean Beach rather than Burnham's main beaches. Keep your dog on a lead at Brean: it is a busy, family-focused area with vehicles and horses present.

Most of the food and drink options are straightforward, with confirmed welcomes at several venues. A few places have unconfirmed policies, so it is worth checking ahead if your plans depend on it. Brean's holiday park bars and cafes tend to be open longer hours than those in central Burnham.
